It all started in Roman times, when Caesar and Augustine conquered the area now known as Germany in the early 1st century. The Romans rode into the district of Limburg-Weilburg in The Hesse region and delighted in the sparkling springs which erupted from the ground and they duly called them Aqua Saltare (Latin for ‘dancing water’). The name was applied to the town and has since evolved to the more German-sounding name, Selters.
