In August, I went to the Hollywood Vampires concert and was mesmerised by Joe Perry’s look, explains stylist Charlotte Gindreau when asked about the inspiration for this shoot. “Rock style from the 70’s and 80’s has always been among my greatest inspirations.”
Gindreau had been ruminating on an editorial in honour of her heroes and immediately thought of Chris Puttins. She’d been following his work and was a fan of his “elegant aesthetic.” And producer Simona Gol brought hair and makeup artist Eva Dieckhoff on board, alongside a cast of locally-cast models.
Although it was the first time the team had all worked together, their shared tastes and references ensured a shared sense of creative understanding.
The shoot takes its name from the song performed by Johnny Depp with the Hollywood Vampires. “You Can’t Put Your Arms Around a Memory” and captures the nostalgia of looking back at an era and its icons with a certain fascination. “It’s a tribute to that raw romantic and slightly melancholic spirit of classic rock, “ explains Gindreau.
The resulting imagery celebrates classicism mixed with the rebellious mood of Gindreau’s favourite era. “True style isn’t about wearing the latest trends. It’s about knowing how to wear things,” she explains. “The right cut, the right proportions, beautiful fabrics, textures and colours can make all the difference. And, of course, the attitude of the person wearing them. It’s that subtle balance between sophistication and nonchalance which is particularly fascinating.”
