Unveiling the first glimpses of his vision for Jil Sander, Simone Bellotti harnesses the power of music and moving image in his debut act as the brand’s new creative director, releasing an EP and short film. The seven-track EP is a musical collaboration with multidisciplinary sound artist and composer Bochum Welt. The musician is know for his melodic electronica, which bridges ambient minimalism and experimental work, and the new EP is accompanied by an ethereal music video dedicated to the track ‘Wanderlust’.
Filmed on the banks of the river Elbe in Hamburg, where Jil Sander founded her eponymous brand in 1968, industrial and historic emblems of the city’s story evoke feelings of nostalgia, romance and youthful optimism as synthesised sounds invite the viewer to travel through an experience of wanderlust on the high points of the song’s composition. For Bellotti, “Jil Sander is a house that owns duality. Its aesthetic is based on the power of heightened simplification, and the energy released by the face-off of strictness and lightness, rigour and abandon. This opposition is captured by the city of Hamburg, with its Northern elegance and harbour thriving in all kinds of activities, where it all started.”
Premiered to an audience of thought leaders from Germany’s fashion, art, and design world – including 10 DE Editor-in-Chief Toby Grimditch – the soundscape of the film and EP’s preview event was curated by Ruggero Pietromarchi with a live set by Bochum Welt. In choosing music as the medium for his first Jil Sander project, Bellotti signals his desire to embrace a multidisciplinary practice for the brand that is both enticing and expressive, supporting musicians through ongoing collaboration as part of the DNA of the brand.
