“We go back to 2008;” explains creative director, John Yonatan Jacoby when asked about his connection to stylist Noey Park. “We were roommates at fashion school in Milan, and we’ve worked together on and off ever since, from student projects back in the day to eventually professional campaigns and editorials across Europe.”
Both creatives work but are not born in Europe: they bonded over conversations surrounding cultural difference, assimilation and what stays with you, when you leave home. So when they planned a trip to Korea together this year, it felt natural that to want to shoot there.
The two friends teamed up with photographer Yoonwoo Kim, after Jacoby reached out to him, after following his work through instagram. In their first conversation they discussed the idea of queer culture as it is a subject. “Kim explained that shooting sexuality isn’t so natural for him in the Korean context, that it’s a culture that relates to it differently, “ explains Jacoby. “That conversation is actually where our shoot started. It immediately connected with everything Noey and I had been talking about for years.”
The result of the meeting of minds is Nunchi, an editorial shot for 10 DE: Nunchi is a Korean word referring to the art of reading what is felt, but never said. The intelligence of understanding a room, a person, a mood, without anything being spoken. “It came up in my first conversation with Yoonwoo, when we were trying to articulate something about Korean culture that I kept circling around but couldn’t name,” Jacoby explains. “The moment he explained it I knew that was the editorial. It also connected directly to what Noey and I had been talking about for years — the parts of yourself that communicate without being stated, that stay with you across cultures without ever needing to announce themselves.”
